Event Venues fit for a Queen

Why not push the boat out this year and entertain, wine, dine, and socialise in style at Scotland's award-winning attraction and unique event venue in Edinburgh... The Royal Yacht Britannia

Written by Linda Jackson

Despite her age she still looks good, much younger than her years, and very classy. She's travelled the globe, has enjoyed many an evening in the company of Kings, Queens, Presidents and Prime Ministers, has a distinct air of royalty about her, and is renowned for her exclusive events.

Who is, and how to get an introduction to, this unique and well-travelled lady - a refined lady who has enjoyed a much-publicised illustrious and intriguing life? All very much above board I hasten to add.

So you can get my drift, and without further ado, let me introduce you to Britannia. She is a big tourist attraction in Edinburgh, and you'll find her - the Royal Yacht - sitting pretty in the historic Port of Leith, two miles from the city centre, where she is permanently berthed and from where she enjoys spectacular views over the Firth of Forth.

Interesting facts and figures about the Royal Yacht Britannia

Over her 44 years in royal service the Royal Yacht Britannia journeyed more than one million miles, covered around one thousand official visits, made over 600 ports-of-call visiting 135 countries, and was able to produce her own fresh water from sea water.  It was a tranquil place to be as shouting on the ship was strictly forbidden, hand signals only, much appreciated no doubt by the four sets of royal honeymooners over the years that enjoyed the privacy she offered. For State visits up to 45 additional staff were brought on board… as well as a mere five tonnes of luggage for the Queen.  No last-minute “nothing to wear” panic there then.

The Royal Yacht Britannia today: a five-star event venue and award-winning tourist attraction in Edinburgh

Although having celebrated her 60th anniversary in 2013 and now retired from official duties (decommissioned in 1997), she is still very much a working ship – not only as one of the top day tourist attractions in Scotland, but as an exclusive use five-star evening venue for corporate entertaining, special events, private dinners, product launches, drinks receptions, and special family occasions. Such is the allure of Britannia that Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall held their pre-wedding reception aboard, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge amongst the royal guests.

Exclusive private dining in a unique Edinburgh dinner venue

When it comes to local produce Scotland is spoiled for choice: Perthshire lamb, venison from the Highlands, beef from Orkney, west coast crab, huge prawns and succulent scallops… so you can expect exquisite food, freshly made on board, when you dine on the Royal Yacht Britannia. Needless to say the Sommelier is on hand to help with wine selection from the ship’s extensive list, but the burden of choosing one of the mouth-watering fittingly-named menus sits fairly and squarely on your shoulders… after which your choice of one of the Britannia ‘Exclusives’, the ‘Balmoral’, the ‘Holyrood’ or ‘Royal’ option, will  be remembered and revered. Should you really want to roll out the red carpet big time for your special event, there’s always the option of a Tasting Dinner – whatever floats your boat, it’s your party.

Red carpet events aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia

One can imagine how unforgettable the experience of being piped aboard Britannia will be, red carpet under foot, savouring aperitif and canapés in the State Drawing Room, enjoying a private guided tour, followed by a sumptuous meal. A couple of scrummy menus which have tantalised my taste buds to distraction, and which I’d love to share with you are…

The Exclusive Moët Hennessy tasting dinner: As Moët Hennessy holds the Royal Warrant to supply Champagne to Her Majesty The Queen (and the Royal Yacht continues the relationship), it’s only to be expected that there is a very special tasting dinner offered on board. After guests enjoy a welcome cocktail in the State Drawing Room, they are escorted by Britannia’s butlers to the Officers’ Wardroom for this Edinburgh exclusive fine-dining experience. Believe me, the red carpet is really rolled out (literally) for this exquisite meal – it’s accompanied by wines and Cognac specially paired with each course.

Britannia’s Scottish evening: The piper and red carpet are on stage again for this Scottish evening, but after Champagne and canapés in the State Drawing Room (entertained by a pianist) this five-course dinner will be served in the State Dining Room. The obligatory Burns ‘Address to a Haggis’ is of course included (where would we be without it), as are the gentle tones of a Scottish harp playing in the background throughout the evening.

For the royal icing on the cake, after dinner guests can choose to take after-dinner drinks or maybe a special Britannia cocktail (the mixologist is a bit of a cocktail wizard) on the Royal Deck, choose from a selection of after-dinner entertainment (including Beat the Retreat), or dance to the sounds of a jazz and swing band or ceilidh.

Exclusive Edinburgh venue for receptions, product launches, dancing or dining

Isn’t Edinburgh lucky to have The Royal Yacht Britannia ever present, the ship is such a unique events and exclusive hospitality venue and is suitable for a wide range of events from family get-together’s to impressive product launches. The ship is open year round as an exclusive evening venue, catering for up to 450 guests for drinks receptions and up to 196 dinner guests in the State Apartments and Royal Deck.

For a treat on that special occasion consider a private morning tour or evening tour.

Her Majesty The Queen, before Britannia was decommissioned, always said that “Britannia is the one place where I can truly relax” so how very memorable it would be to entertain your own guests in the same relaxing (yet formal) way, to follow in the footsteps of royalty and to imagine what a day in the life of the Queen would be like. Well - she would have been woken by her personal maid with morning tea, taken her bath (which had been checked with a thermometer by the maid), enjoyed an afternoon tea in the Sun Lounge of wafer-thin cucumber and smoked salmon sandwiches, fine pastries and cakes. Just imagine.

Yes… just imagine choosing Britannia for your special event… it would be an event of a lifetime so, go on, push the boat out.
