All the rooms within Borthwick Castle have some historic connections. The rooms are located in various parts of the Castle, mostly accessed by the original spiral staircases and secret doorways. Some are named after the historic figures that slept there many years ago. The room names include:

Wizards Tower Borthwick CastleWizard's Tower: the highest and most private bedchamber in the Castle complete with vaulted stone ceiling and crystal chandelier. The ambience of this room is medieval, mystical and sumptuous. The room can only be accessed by the newly reopened secret staircase past the minstrel's gallery.

Knoghts Templar Borthwick Castle Knights Templar: A very spacious twin bedchamber with a large day bed, the large windows provide lots of natural light and imposing views of the countryside below. Sliding oak doors open onto an arched ceiling bathroom alcove with a wet room shower.

Borthwick Castle Luxury Bedroom Adinston: The lowest bedchamber in the North Tower, the Adinston is accessible from the minstrel's gallery, is a comfortable and spacious twin room. With north and south facing windows, it features elegant hand carved beds, a log stove and luxurious wet shower room.

‘The Earl of Bothwell’ Bedchamber is one of the most striking and atmospheric rooms

Bothwell was a fierce and ambitious soldier who allegedly seduced or forced Mary Queen of Scots into marrying him. Accused of murdering Marys second husband, The Lord Darnley, Bothwell  and Mary fled to Borthwick Castle, when the Confederate Lords were approaching Bothwell fled and Mary followed him by jumping from a window disguised as a boy. Four days later they faced the Lords at the battle of Carberry Hill.

THE ROOM

Borthwick Castle - Earl of BothwellThis bedchamber reflects a strong and masculine character and is located at the opposite end of the State Room to the Mary Queen of Scots Bed Chamber. The Earl of Bothwell is the only bedchamber to feature a full four poster king size bed, carved from solid oak and is a replica of the bed King James IV, Mary's son, slept in when he was crowned King of England. A very well preserved large medieval chimney breast stands tall near the centre of the room. The deep blue and gold luxurious fabrics and rich ceiling to floor velvet curtains create a sense of grandeur and splendour. The velvet curtains frame a luxury bath and shower alcove. There is an additional large day bed with lions head carvings.

Borthwick Castle - Sinclair Room Sinclair: The tallest of the bedchambers, you need to be fit to reach the South Tower’s highest room. With vaulted stone roof,  beautiful turquoise colours and oak panelling. Sit back by the log burner and enjoy Uccello’s painting of the Battle of San Romano – a scene contemporary with the Castle.

Borthwick Castle - Red Rose Bedroom Red Rose: A warm and cosy bedchamber with rich rose and red colours, this is perfect for lovers, complete with hand carved oak royal canopy bed, facing a large medieval fireplace where you can warm yourself at the log stove.

Borthwick Castle - Luxury Bedroom Sir Walter Scott: An elegant, romantic room with restful blues and purple hues and a subtle hint in the fabrics and styling of Sir Walter Scott’s passion for wildlife in its fabrics and styling. The hand carved oak bed is a replica of Scott’s own.

Borthwick Castle - Oliver Cromwell Room Oliver Cromwell: Below the Great Hall, reached by a discreet winding staircase, lies The Oliver Cromwell bedchamber. Very sensual with its charcoal walls and soft lighting, the chamber features the exact copy of Cromwell’s bed, including his coat of arms.

The ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ Bedchamber – a Bedroom fit for a queen
